Suffix derived from the French ville (town) used in names of towns or cities (Jacksonville, Evansville, Owensville, etc.).

Also a semi-outdated slang use of the suffix is to turn the indicated quality, action or condition into a groovy-sounding noun. Frequently used by novelist James Ellroy.
