"Custom will reconcile people to any atrocity, and fashion will drive them to acquire any custom"
—George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

"No external enemy can attack our freedom. Only we can."
—Rahul Mahajan

"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair."
—H.L. Mencken

One of the problems here is that the idea of objectivity has been taken to such absurd lengths you can no longer tell the reader what's going on.

If you were reporting in the 18th century on the slave trade, would you give equal time to the prisoners and the slave ship captain? If you were present at the liberation of an extermination camp, would you give equal time to the SS as well as the prisoners? No. Journalists have to have a moral sense of what the story is.
—Robert Fisk, In These Times 6 January 2003 (interview)

"Be wary of making write-ups too long and comprehensive"
Gritchka's style guide

(grin)

"Gritchka says Another superb and ridiculously long sid masterpiece."
(refering to Hissène Habré)

As far as I know, I have more write-ups with "massacre" in the title than anyone else on the database. This seems to be a bit of a dubious distinction.

sid is called before the committee

Question: Have you now or have you ever been a member of the truck farming party?

sid: I refuse to answer that on the grounds that doing so will incriminate me.

Question: Is it your intention to mislead and deliberately lie to this committee about your activities in the so-called truck farming party.

sid: Again I must invoke my fifth amendment right against self-incrimination, sir.

Question: You are aware you have no rights before this committee?

sid: Apparently so, sir.

(The Truck Farmer—you know you want to....)

This place needs more truck farming. Let's begin.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or in the holy name of liberty and democracy?
—Mohandas Gandhi

[World War I] revealed the essence of war, of all wars, because however "just" or "humanitarian" may be the claims, at the irreducible core of all war is the slaughter of the innocent, organized by national leaders, accompanied by lies.
—Howard Zinn
