Paleoanthropology focuses on the evolution and physical development of the hominids, primarily from the Australopithecines to modern Homo sapiens. It uses fossil remains and DNA (both modern and ancient) to map the development of humans.

It's primarily archaeology, not paleoanthropology, that studies human cultures through their remains.
