Verchojansk in
Yakutiya (in the north east of
Russia) is the
coldest
place on
earth. There is a
weather station on
Antarctica (
Vostok, owned by the Russians) that once measured –89.2° C, but Verchojansk actually is a
real town. It was founded as a
fort in 1638 and the main activities are
tin and
gold mining.
Some
data:
- On February 7 in 1892 the lowest
temperature ever outside Antarctica was measured,
-69.8° C (about -90° F).
- The so-called January
isotherm is at -50° C.
- The largest variations in temperature on the earth over the year are measured in Verchojansk; between –70° and +37° C.
info from my own memory, and meteonet.nl for a few exact temperatures.
