This is the oldest section of
Seattle, located south of
Pike Place Market and near where the old
Kingdome was. This is where the term "
Skid Row" comes from, named after the way timber was slid down
Yesler Way to the waterfront. It is also home of
Smith Tower, which was the tallest building west of the
Mississippi, when it was built, in
1914
After years of disrepair, the area has been revitalized. At night, it is a center of night life. For one cover (varies by night, but usually around $10), you are granted access to about 10 or 12 bars, ranging from jazz to techno. So, there is something for everyone.
During the daytime, take the Seattle Underground tour for an entertaining history tour of pioneer Seattle. This area is really the heart of Seattle.
