Queens Surface Transit is one of four private bus operators in
Queens County, NY. Its origins can be traced back to
horsecar operations in Queens, perhaps as early as the 1860s. It was known as
Queens Transit from 1937 to 1986, until it merged with another private bus operator in Queens,
Steinway Transit, to form today's Queens Surface Transit. Most Queens Surface buses are painted white with a bright orange stripe below the window line, though some have full-bus ads painted on them. Queens Surface serves
Flushing,
Jamaica,
College Point,
Forest Hills, and
Astoria. It also runs express bus service between Manhattan and eastern Queens.
