The football stadium of the
University of Texas at
Austin Longhorns, hosting the university's
NCAA Division I football team, which competes in the
Big 12 Conference. Built in 1924 at an estimated cost of $275,000, the stadium also plays host to the university's
track and field events, including the nationally competitive
Texas Relays. At its official opening the stadium hosted a spectacular game between the Longhorns and archrivals
Texas A&M Aggies, drawing a
record crowd of 33,000, then the largest crowd in state history to witness a single athletic event. Since construction, the stadium has undergone several additions and renovations, and the track facilities have moved to an adjacent field on campus. Also known as the Darrell K. Royal
Texas Memorial Stadium, the structure is dedicated to
Texans who fought in both
World War I and
World War II. As of 2002, the stadium's maximum
capacity is 80,106.
