Short for
Grupo Transportes Aéreos Centroamericanos, or "
Central American Air Transport Group." Founded in 1931 by
RCAF pilot
Lowell Yerex. Originally
Honduras's national airline, Taca was bought out by a businessman from
El Salvador in the 1960's and moved its operations there in 1983.
Grupo TACA emerged in the late 1980's when Taca purchased controlling stakes in three other airlines—Aviateca of Peru, Lacsa of Costa Rica, and Nica of Nicaragua—and spun off an international subsidiary called TACA International.
TACA's logo is five golden macaws, representing its five constituent airlines. It serves several US cities from hubs in Lima, San Jose (CR), and San Salvador, and codeshares with American Airlines. It also operates scheduled service between Toronto and Havana.
