Chris Minh Doky is an exciting young
Danish jazz
double-bassist. I saw him in London in the fine
Pizza Express Jazz Club, when he was promoting his new album
Listen UP!. He is a very
funk-influenced artist, and played a long set featuring highly virtuosic solos from all the participants in his five-peice. Particularly impressive was the drummer Louis Winsberg, whose
ten minute solo was frankly astounding, although visually I think Minh Doky's solos were just as impressive, as the
sheer scale of the instruments necessitates lots of movement to play quickly.
Minh Doky was inspired to play the electric bass by an Eberhard Weber record when he was only nine, and at fourteen he changed over to the acoustic bass. He fulfils my criterion for judging a skilled artist in that he sounds just as good live as he does on record.
