An unusually warm winter almost stopped these games, but thanks to a massive
snow moving project by the Austrian army, the games could be held as planned.
Soviet Union continued to dominate with 11 gold medals.
Russian Lydia Skoblikova won all four gold medals in the women's speed
skating and her countrywoman Claudia Boyarskikh won three gold in cross
country skiing. The Russian ice hockey team went undefeated and won the first
in a long unbroken row of gold medals.
