The word 'Dutch' has been wrongly taken from the word 'Deutsch' or 'Dietsch'. This word has its origin in the Middle Ages of Holland and meant 'language of the common people', in opposition to Latin, which was the language of religion and study.

Deutsch, obviously, became the name of Deutschland.
