• id Software released Quake for PC.
• Americans elected Democrat Bill Clinton for a second four-year term as President of the United States of America.
• The Taliban captured the capital of Afghanistan and established a totalitarian government based on a radical interpretation of the Qur'an. Members of the Taliban would control the country for five years. The beginning of the end of Taliban rule occurred on September 11, 2001, when a terrorist group that the Taliban had been harboring attacked key targets in the United States.

1996 is the name of the song after "Antichrist Superstar" on the album Antichrist Superstar by Marilyn Manson. Apparently, Manson couldn't have two songs called "Antichrist Superstar" on one album, so he renamed this one. Excerpt:
