Originally called Chicago Municipal Airport (a.k.a."Munie"), Midway was built in 1927, on the city's southwest side. (The airport was renamed "Midway" in 1949, in recognition of the Battle of Midway.) In only five years, it had earned the title of "World's Busiest Airport", serving over 100 000 customers. It held this title until 1962, when O'Hare surpassed Midway in number of flights. One reason for Midway's decline in service was the fact that it had short runways -- too short to handle the newer and faster jet planes that were serving O'Hare. In 1967, a reconstruction project began, to help draw customers back to the airport, and relieve the congestion problems seen at other airports. The first major airline formed after deregulation, Midway Airlines was credited, along with Southwest Airlines, with giving both Midway and the surrounding neighborhoods an economic boost during the 1980s. Midway Airlines continued operating at the airport until they went out of business in 1991, but Southwest Airlines and ATA were quick to fill the gap. Midway Airport was renovated again recently, in an effort to improve service.
Midway has four concourses.

Midway is served by the CTA's Orange Line, providing train service to the loop. In addition, the airport is served by CTA bus routes 47 (47th), 54B (Cicero south), 55(Garfield), 55A (55th-Austin), 55N (55th-Narragansett, 59 (59th/61st), 62H (Archer/Harlem), 63 (63rd), 63W (63rd west), and 165 (65th west), as well as Pace Bus routes 379 (West 79th, 382 (Central/Clearing), 383 (South Cicero), 384 (Narragansett-Ridgeland), 385 (87th/111th/127th), 386 (South Harlem), and 831 (95th).
