As a very basic jewelry finding, a jump ring is a wire ring with a single split. It is used to connect a thread or wire to the clasp. It might also be used in between sections. It is usually made of brass, silver or gold.

When opening a jump ring always twist it gently, slip it into place and then twist it back to a closed position. Never pull the split wider. If you do so you will either make it difficult to close the gap all the way (and your piece will not stay together), or you will push the ends together too far and achieve a weird look that might snag clothing.
