A last name used by
Sikhs as well as others from North
India.
It means
lion and was used very commonly by the
Rajputs, who were the rulers of the numerous princely states in Northern
India before the British
Raj.
The
Sikhs adopted this name when
Guru Gobind Singh created the
Khalsa, which are baptized and fully practicing
Sikhs.
