ESG was an early 80's funk group out of the Bronx. The three Scroggins sisters (Renee, Marie and Valerie) had a complex funk sound that consisted of vocals, drums and bass along with occasional guitar. They had a hit single, "Moody," in 1980 with Joy Division producer Martin Hannett. Their sparse, mostly percussive sound has been influential on other artists, and illegal sampling has been a sore point for the group who recently released a record entitled "Sample credits don't pay our bills."
