Located in Chicago’s Hyde Park-Woodlawn neighborhood, Blackstone Bicycle Works (BBW) is a community-based not-for-profit bicycle recycling and repair shop. BBW provides local youth with the opportunity to gain practical and educational biking experience in a safe and supportive environment. Since its inception in 1994, the goal of BBW has been to engage children’s curiosity and enthusiasm through work on supervised projects such as repairing bicycles for resale and stripping damaged bikes for salvageable parts. In addition to programs on bicycle safety, maintenance, and repair, BBW also offers an Earn-a-Bike program where Chicago’s youth can work towards earning their own bicycle.
