Doesn't it seem strange that, if lonliness is universal (and I'm certainly not saying that it isn't) that we feel lonely at all? Shouldn't we feel like we're in really good company, like we're surrounded by a lot of people who are feeling the same way we are?

But we don't. Is that a freak of nature, like some sort of biological accident that provides a lonely gene? Is it the fault of some ethereal diety who created us alone and doomed us to a life of lonliness?

Or ... is it simply our own egos, telling us that we are so different from everyone else on earth that we couldn't possibly find people who will understand? Are we really so sure of our individuality that we refuse to see the empathy in every single person?
