On May 21, 2000, Amtrak renamed its Southern California corridor trains, the San Diegans, to the Pacific Surfliners. The rationale was that new equipment was coming soon to the trains, and besides, they didn't just go to San Diego, they went other places, too.
The promised new equipment made its debut on May 26, 2000, providing service on one round trip per day; it was the new bilevel Surfliners, sort of a cross between Amtrak's Superliners and a commuter train car, featuring a snack bar on the lower level of one of the cars instead of a separate dining car or lounge car. Over the next year or so, enough Surfliner cars were built and delivered to expand the new cars to most Pacific Surfliner trains, although the older single-level Amfleet equipment continued to show up on occasional trains, especially the ones that went north of Los Angeles.
