Serving Chicago, Omaha, Denver, and intermediate points

Amtrak train numbers: 5 and 6

Predecessor railroad train numbers: Burlington 1 and 2

The Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad's Denver Zephyr, another in their Zephyr series of trains using their streamlined stainless steel equipment, was their flagship train, running on an overnight schedule between Chicago and Denver.

In the early days of Amtrak, when its City of San Francisco train was running only three days a week between Chicago and Oakland, the schedule was protected between Chicago and Denver on the other four days of the week by a train called the Denver Zephyr. When the City of San Francisco went daily and became the San Francisco Zephyr, Amtrak dropped the Denver Zephyr name.
