Matchbox, Hot Wheels, MicroMachines and various electric race car systems (e.g. Tyco) append this to their advertisements since not all of their toys are made to the same scale, dimensions, or features. A plastic ramp with a spring that launches a Matchbox car across your living room floor may not fit every Matchbox vehicle ever made, so this prevents lawsuits from angry soccer moms who claim "It said Matchbox on the package, so they all should work together!"
In recent times, this would be referred to as a cross-platform incompatibility or a failure to adhere to accepted standards.
