Sifton was appointed by Sir Wilfrid Laurier to be the Minister of the Interior, because more people were needed to support the growing Canadian Economy. He started an Immigration Act called “The Open Door Immigration”, Which allowed every English-speaking citizen to come to Canada and be given free land. He posted Immigration Posters and built immigration offices in Europe, to promote immigration. Even though Sifton didn’t want any Asians, Jews or southern Europeans, they still immigrated to Canada due to the lack of strong inspection. Asians were put to work at the railways and mines, because they were not respected by the government and provided cheap labor. Due to Sifton’s policy, Canada was growing rapidly and the population of the prairies increased.
