A bizarre event which takes place every year late in July is the
World Flounder Tramping Championship.
The venue is a section of mud flats near Palnackie in south-west
Scotland. Around three hundred people gather in the shallows to feel-out
the flat fish with their bare feet, hopefully avoiding sharp stones and
crabs. When they find a specimen, they have to remove it from the mud
- no mean feat with the slippery flounder trying to escape. The
catch is then weighed and returned.
There are separate classes for men, women and children.
