Hoag's Object is a peculiar ring-shaped galaxy, 600 million light-years away and visible in
Gemini. It is
unusual because of its apparent shape- a ring 120,000 light-years at its widest1,
surrounding a
smaller disk at its center. The ring contains blue stars and the disc is yellow. The blue colour indicates large,
young stars and the yellow colours indicate older stars. The gap that separates them is apparently empty, but it
may harbour stars that are too faint to see.
Interestingly, another much more distant ring galaxy is visible through this gap. (Shown in the diagram
below near the 1 O'Clock position.)
The object was discovered in 1950 by the astronomer Art Hoag. He initially thought it was the smoking
remains of a sun-like star; he later realised that it could only be a galaxy. Observations made in 1970 and
more recently in 2001 by the Hubble Space Telescope confirmed this.
There is still speculation about how such an object could have formed. One theory is that two galaxies collided
then passed through each other, leading to a localised, secondary phase of star formation. No culprit galaxy
has been found. Another is that the blue
stars were born in another galaxy and torn from it. Such encounters would have happened several
billion years ago.
