SS-192 USS Squalus (pronounced "skwaylus") was the eleventh U.S. Navy
S-type submarine. She was made famous on May 23, 1939
when she sank in approximately 242 feet of water just off Portsmouth New
Hampshire with 59 hands on board. The subsequent rescue and salvage operation retrieved all 33 survivors of the first
moments of the disaster were saved. 26 other hands perished.
The accident itself occurred at within minutes of 08:40 after Lieutenant
Oliver Naquin gave the order to perform a crash dive test. The standard for
this particular task is to dive to 50 feet in under 60 seconds from a surface
cruise of 16 knots.
