The ability to focus and maintain attention on a suitable, narrow range of stimuli develops rapidly throughout childhood. Attention becomes less random less reactive and more controlled, more actively planned.

During the course of their development children acquire the ability to become more selective in where they center their attention. Their attention soon becomes longer, and they become increasingly capable of filtering out meaningless or irrelevant stmuli in order to concentrate on the information that matters most.
