A well-known
psychological phenomenon: normally nonviolent people will commit
irrational acts of
violence when instructed to do so by someone they perceive as being in
authority.
This explains at least in part how the abominable horrors of war are possible between ostensibly civilized nations, and why Christians will go forth to slaughter the heathen.
The lesson? Question authority and keep your own reason engaged.
