Melonade seems to be a perennial Homestar Runner favorite, from the very old "Marshmallow's Last Stand" cartoon to the "Flushypush" commercial. It's portrayed as a pink concoction in glass pitchers with a few ice cubes. The cartoons weren't my first exposure to the word, though, since I thought it up myself somewhere back in the dim reaches of my childhood. Maybe every kid does after noticing that "melon" and "lemon" have the same letters. I always thought that "Melonade" was just a clever and delicious-sounding misspelling of lemonade. The awe-inspiring power of the internet has informed me otherwise, though. It turns out that it's an actual drink endorsed by the National Watermelon Promotion Board. (National Watermelon Promotion Board? What the ...?)

How to Make 1 Tall Glass of Melonade:
  • 6 ounces cubed, seeded watermelon
  • 4 ounces sour mix
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 6 ounces ice
Blend all ingredients together; serve in a 14-ounce glass. Garnish with lemon and watermelon wedge. To create a daiquiri, add 2 ounces light rum.
