The Stateline Wind Generating Project is soon to become the largest
wind farm in the world, at nearly twice the
size of the one in
Storm Lake,
Iowa. Located in southeastern
Washington and northeastern
Oregon, the project will feature with some 450
electricity-generating
wind turbines to be constructed before the end of
2001. 150 of the turbines will be in Oregon, and 300 will be in Washington. The wind farm will produce approximately 300
megawatts, enough to power approximately 300,000
households. The project is very important, given
the California power crisis and the threat of electricity
shortages spreading all along the
west coast.
The region is already a significant source of wind power, with the nearby Vansycle Ridge Wind Farm in Umatilla County, Oregon, which provides approximately 25 megawatts of power with its 38 turbines in service.
