A guide originally published in 1991 by Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson
of Tsunami via their record label, Simple Machines. Has been added to and
updated; the latest (and last) version was written in 1999 and is available online
at Insound and Indiecentre.
An incredibly useful tool if you are or will ever think about putting out
music. It covers everything you'll need to know:
recording, packaging, art, distribution, copyrights - from how to do
it yourself to people who will do it for you cheap and well. Several small indie
labels have been started using this guide, including Pop Narcotic - a Boston label
which put out singles by such luminaries as Helium, The Swirlies, and Small Factory.
