My heart wants to speak, but it's in a million pieces right now. Piece #117A is being fitted to piece #2716E even as I write this. It's a slow process, the doctors tell me; it may be a few more weeks, maybe a few months. Who knows? And even if the reconstruction is successful, there's no guarantee of much of a voice - it might purr, as it once did; it might gently roar. Or it could be some horrible whine or wheeze, prompting my heart to think better of giving voice to anything. In the meantime, other hearts have been used, but to little effect - an artichoke heart, the seven of hearts, or a purple heart can never really approach the vocal quality of that irrational, erratic beast that is the human heart.
