A term, coined to describe a 60s rhythm and blues duo called the Righteous Brothers (which included Bill Medley, who later co-sang that awful love-ballad duet from that awful flick - was it Dirty Dancing?). Meant as a compliment, denoting any white performer or act who could have played The Apollo and lived to tell - Steve Winwood, say, or Alex Chilton. I shudder to include Michael Bolton - pop music has become so prefab and homogenized that anyone can do "soul music" now.
