A record label founded by manager/producer Joe Boyd in 1980, now owned by Rykodisc. Fairly eclectic; one strand of the catalog goes back to Boyd's days running Witchseason Productions: reissues of material by the Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, and disques, old and new, by Fairport-related artistes like Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, plus the Fruit Tree collection of Nick Drake's recordings. Hannibal would also become associated with roots musics (and nouveau folk-rock-ish hybrids) from around the world over the years, from Cuba's ¡Cubanismo! to Hungary's Márta Sebestyén to Tibet's Choying Drolma, as well as sounds from el Norte and the British Isles. And then there are those people who tend to remain under the radar of American labels, large and small, like the unrockband blackgirls, "colorful" New Orleans pianist James Booker, jazz-punk-funk semi-legends Defunkt, Henry Cow/Slapp Happy chanteuse Dagmar Krause, and the ageless singing musicologist Taj Mahal.
