An American hero, for a while; he made the first Transatlantic flight in 1927, in his plane "The Spirit of St. Louis". His son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped (and later found dead) in 1932; it became a national media obsession. Became involved with America First, both a natural outgrowth of his family's pacifism, and, unfortunately, a venue to show off his racism and anti-semitism; he later made some amends by working with the Army Air Corps in WWII.
