mis-translation of certain
New Testament books which depicted
Mary, the mother of Jesus as a
virgin.
The Hebrew word Almah, or Almeh was translated into latin as virginus, as both words mean "young girl". However, the double meaning and extra connotation present in the latin form, i.e. a woman who has never engaged in sexual intercourse, changed the interpretation of the New Testament among a small sect of Christians forever. This small sect grew into what is now known as the Holy Roman Catholic Church, who have as one of the cornerstones of their religion the idea of the virgin birth.
