Splagchnizomai (splänkh-nē'-zo-mī)

A word in biblical Greek which is apparently somewhat difficult to translate. In the KJV Bible it is most often (7 times) translated as, "to have compassion". Less frequently (5 times), but perhaps more accurately, the translation is, "to be moved with compassion". The Greek actually goes even farther. It may sound quite dramatic in today's Western culture but a reasonable translation might be, "To be so moved by compassion that it twists the gut painfully". Greek to me, and yet, I can relate to that.
