To make the PC Engine more powerful than ever, NEC decided to upgrade their CD-ROM² technology and came up with the Super CD-ROM² format.

Learning from the mistakes of the CD-ROM² and Interface Unit debacle, the SCD was a combined system, meaning all you needed to buy was the one unit (provided you already had a PCE or CoreGrafx). In a surprising move of niceness, NEC released a Super System Card to owners of the original CD-ROM² to upgrade their systems.

Games were also easier to develop, which was very attractive to developers and soon made the SCD software library surpass the original's (partial thanks goes to those rogue porno game companies).

(The Duo family all had Super CD-ROM² as the standard.)
