Jyväskylä is a town with 78000 inhabitants (in 2000) of which about 35000 are students. It's a town full of young, educated people - it's often called the
Athens of Finland because of all the schools (including popular
university). it is a home to
Jyväskylän Lyseon lukio, the first Finnish-language high school ever (established in 1848).
The city center is very nice. The main street is car-free zone and it's heated - no ice in the winter! Almost every shop there is in some mall. There are few pleasant parks, museums and art galleries in the center.
It's really nice place to live in. However, it's not very popular as tourist attraction. There are some big events (biggest of which just happened last weekend, the World Rally Championship race Neste Rally Finland) and lots of buildings designed by famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (who, by the way, studied in the Lyseo).
