New York City.
In the summer of 1999, Joe decided to do a few club shows with just him on piano and vocals, Graham Maby on bass and vocals, and Gary Burke on drums. These shows sold out quickly, and were the most sought-after tickets of the summer for die-hard Joe Jackson fans.
The shows themselves were magical. I had the opportunity to go to one of the Joe's Pub shows, and I was not less than 10 feet from Joe himself. The performances were inspired, the trio could really make the songs work, and they all looked like they were having a hell of a time.
The show was also an interesting mix of songs from all of Joe's career, as well as some cover tunes of songs he found influential in his own musical upbringing. Thus we got covers of Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo, The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, David Bowie's Life On Mars, Steely Dan's King Of The World and Radiohead's Karma Police, among others.
