A scale used by
EMTs everywhere to determine the level of
consciousness of a
victim. Very similiar to the
Glasgow Coma Scale, but easier to figure out, and you can glean a lot from one glance at the AVPU vitals.
After checking the ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), the captain determines the AVPU, which is:
Alert: Talking to you, lucid.
Verbal: Speaking but not making sense, also intoxicated, in an altered mental state, can't remember their name, etc.
Pain: Won't move/respond unless you press on their nail bed or cause enough pain for them to react.
Unresponsive: Completely unconscious, not reacting to any stimuli.
After this, they can use it to determine their CUPS status and how critical they are, along with other factors. Usually the EMT in charge of vital signs checks this every 5 minutes, or at least 3 times en route for changes.
