In the 1980s in Queensland, Australia, access to university was primarily based on TE Score (Tertiary Entrance Score). The top possible TE Score was 990, which was a virtual necessity if you wanted to be accepted by the medical schools and be trained as a doctor.

The 990 indicated that you were ranked in the top 1 percent of all 17 year olds in the state, which apparently counted for 410 individuals in 1985. Note that this is a pretty nominal kind of ranking, as less than half the 17 year olds in the state were actually still at school. Below the glorious 990, scores were bracketed by the half percent, so the next available score was 985. The lowest score dished out in in 1985 was somewhere around 660.
