I have always hated begonias

for no rational reason

until this year

when the darn things

keep blooming

no matter what

the weather does

no matter what

other plants come and go,

sunflowers and roses

dying from too much rain

or not enough.

I never knew how plucky

begonias were,

all pink and shades of pink,

the red geraniums struggling

to keep up appearances

while in the back yard,

unperturbed tansy and

Jerusalem artichokes

sing yellow to the bluest sky.
