Aka Samuel R. Delany
A very good, eccentric writer, also happens to be a really nice, big, gay black man. Wrote his first book at 17 (very beat era). Most of his books deal with (in some part) speculative fiction of sexuality issues, often men. It's not uncommon to start a book with the lead character a man, and end it a women (Trouble on Triton).
Some of his titles are works of art in themselves, such as Time considered as a helix of semi-precious stones.
A good short story collection of his is DriftGlass
