A song originally written and performed by Harry Belafonte, it was revisited some decades later by the Grateful Dead and has been covered fairly extensively since then. My favorite version is the zydeco cover by C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band. It's kind of ironic that the two artists who made this song big were male, but I guess it only goes to show.
