壇之浦

The final battle of the Gempei War in which Minamoto forces commanded by Minamoto Yoritomo and his younger brother Minamoto Yoshitsune wiped out the Taira clan in vicious hand-to-hand combat on boats at sea off the Dannoura peninsula near what is now the city of Shimonoseki. The child emperor Antoku was killed in the battle's waning moments when his mother grabbed him and plunged overboard rather than let him be captured.
