A former writer for, and president of the
Harvard Lampoon. Meyer is the funny man behind
The Simpsons Television show. He was originally hired by
Sam Simon, who was a fan of his
samizdat comedy publication,
Army Man, to work on the television version of
Matt Groening's creation. It quickly became his creation.
Meyer's described role on the show is a sort of
Executive Producer. His real job is to sit in a rewrite room and go over episodes of the show to make them more funny. Much of the comedic sensibility of
The Simpsons can be traced directly to the mind of George Meyer.
Mike Scully, editor-in-chief of
The Simpsons was quoted in a New Yorker article (13 March 2000)
George is the best comedy writer in Hollywood.
