The pricing structure is fairly complicated, but like other easy ventures, varies with demand. Here in Glasgow, you can get an A Class from £9 per day, plus a "£5 one-off preparation fee". They can also charge for partial days, so you don't need to take it back some multiple of 24 hours after picking it up.
It also seems that they charge insurance based on how much of a risk you are. Many points on your licence? You'll pay more for insurance, then.
