The first ticker-tape parade was held on October 28, 1886 at the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. This was a holiday for New York, except for Wall Street. There, clerks unreeled spools of the ticker tape over the parade route while still at work. Since then, ticker tape parades have celebrated heros (either national or local) such as the crew of the Discovery upon a safe return, and Yankees baseball team after winning the World Series. John Glenn has received two ticker tape parades - one for his first space flight, and another for his flight on the Discovery. While ticker-tape parades happen in many cities, it is primarily a New York thing.
