Interesting sidenote:
In addition the
cannibalism practiced by the Karankawa, they engaged in another
bizarre dietary habit: When food supplies were low, they picked out
undigested bits of food from their
fecal matter, like whole seeds, and ate them again. A kind of
Second Harvest, if you will.
I learned this in
seventh grade history; at the time, the teacher told us this was the only thing we would remember from the class. He was, in fact, correct about the
minds of
thirteen-year-olds.
