A new formula of VicksTM brand ChlorasepticTM. Whereas the traditional formula of Chloraseptic contains a 1.4% solution of phenol, Ultra Chloraseptic contains the topical anesthetic benzocaine (0.71%) and ethanol. In "classic" Chloraseptic, the phenol acts as both an anesthetic (by essentially frying the nerve endings in the throat) and an antiseptic (by essentially frying just about any micro-organism it touches). Vicks claims that the only "active" ingredient is benzocaine, but in order to be a true antiseptic (hence the name), it would make sense to consider the ethanol "active" also. Ethanol is not at all present in the original formula.
Ultra Chloraseptic only requires three successive sprayings to be effective rather than the traditional five. It can be used every three hours, and comes in a fancy new bottle with a much more effective swivel head.
Full list of ingredients: 0.71% Benzocaine, ethanol, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, cetylpyridinium chloride, levomenthol, sodium saccharin, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium hydroxide and water.
